The first form of history is the story you tell yourself.

In the I mine paleo-anthropologists dig for our ancestors while miners dig for diamonds. At the same time, the entries of a historian's diary reveal his personal digging for what he considers the most valuable diamond: the ‘self ’. the I mine is a poetic film with extraordinary characters in search of a voice. Real historical figures perform as characters and viceversa in an experimental narrative about history-writing.

 John P. Roquentin's diary entries guide us through his own struggle while he writes a history book: the biography of a woman who revolutionize the world of auctions. Roquentin is confused, he not only doubts knowing who he is, but also wonders about who the woman really was, what her real 'I' was, beyond the collection of data that Roquentin organizes in chapters. The historian reflects about the language of history and about the writing process involved in the construction of the psychological 'I'.

the I mine takes us to the South African region known as the 'Cradle of Human Kind’, an area where several species of human predecessors have been found during the last century. As an example, the most recent discovery took place in 2013, when thousands of fossil remains belonging to an unknown hominid were found. This and other discoveries have been historically connected to the rich presence of precious metals in that area. Because of this, the film weaves images of those who dig in search of fossils that help us understanding who we are with images recorded 800 meters underground, in the mine where some of the most valuable diamonds in the world have been found. Different notions of value materialize as rocks – gemstones or fossils – in this area.

Meanwhile, Roquentin wonders: Is the self a crystal clear gemstone covered by layers of writing and rewriting?

La primera forma de historia es la que te cuentas a ti mismo.

En the I mine vemos paleoantropólogos excavando los restos de nuestros antepasados mientras mineros excavan en busca diamantes. Al mismo tiempo, el diario de un historiador revela su búsqueda personal de lo que, para él, es el diamante más preciado: el Yo. Con una mirada poética, the I mine se acerca al acto de escribir historia a través de personajes extraordinarios que buscan su propia voz. Personalidades históricas se convierten en personajes y viceversa en esta narración experimental que reflexiona sobre el acto de escritura de la historia.

A través del diario de John P. Roquentin, descubrimos la lucha que éste mantiene consigo mismo mientras escribe un libro histórico: la biografía de una mujer que revolucionó el mundo de las subastas. Roquentin se siente confundido, duda saber quién es él mismo y se pregunta quién sería esta mujer en la realidad, cuál sería su ́yo verdadero ́ más allá de la colección de datos históricos que Roquentin organiza en capítulos. El historiador refexiona sobre el lenguaje de la historia y la escritura del yo psicológico.

the I mine nos lleva a la región Sudafricana conocida como  the ´Cradle of Humankind ´ (la Cuna de la Humanidad), un lugar donde, durante el último siglo, se han encontrado varias especies de antepasados del hombre. El descubrimiento más reciente sucedió en 2013, cuando se encontraron miles de fósiles pertenecientes a un homínido hasta ahora desconocido. Dichos descubrimientos antropológicos han estado históricamente ligados a la abundancia de metales preciosos en la zona. Por eso la película hilvana imágenes de aquellos que excavan en busca de los fósiles que nos ayudan a entender quiénes somos con imágenes grabadas ochocientos metros bajo tierra, en la cercana mina de donde han salido algunos de los diamantes más valiosos del mundo. Diferentes nociones de valor se materializan en forma de piedras –preciosas o fósiles- bajo estas tierras.
Por su lado, Roquentin se pregunta: “¿es el yo una piedra preciosa enterrada bajo capas de escritura?”
